Let into a room full of caged birds
A thing you thought I'd like
I don't know if you've heard
Them pecking the bars at night
The whistle of trapped song
The dull flightless sound
Of music sung wrong
Tethered to the ground
The birds inside
Stare at their mirrors
The time going by decides
And the glass gets clearer
They nailed the stork to the ground
Just to get him to stand still
Wings flap to nowhere with a quiet sound
And his call is getting shrill
All of them waiting to be born
All the shadows on the shells
Of beaks and soft heads bent
With time still left to tell
All the sky still left to fly through
Being dreamt of in the dark
Picking with a soft mouth making
His first gentle marks
Not cage enough
Enough to keep
The birds that are still asleep
Safe before their life sets in
Simple wings set to fly
Simple wings set to begin
Gentle blue white sky
Clouds that pass us all by
Brace yourself for the storm
Keep yourself dry and warm
Someone sees what you do
And never will abandoned you
Someone knows how good you are
And is never very far
You brought me to a room full of caged birds
And left me there to think
I am stilled by the singing slurred
Of a rook who turns and blinks
Like we took the birds from the sky
Kept them in this room
Let the stars come down
Un-hang the moon
Shake them from the sky completely
Leave no light in the dark
Let them burn up the earth
And leave it quiet and stark
