For years, when people talk about education in China,
当人们谈及中国的教育时，
students are often criticized for studying only for grades.
人们总会认为中国学生就是为了成绩而学习。
But some other people hold the opinion that grades encourage students to learn.
但是还有一些人认为成绩将会激励学生学习。
In my opinion, grades do encourage students to learn.
我认为成绩会激励学生学习。
My reasons are as follows.
我的观点如下。
First of all, we have to make it clear that the idea that grades encourage students to learn
首先，我们应该认清楚的是成绩鼓励学生学习并不等于
isn’t identical to the one that students study for grades.
学生为了成绩而学习。
The truth is whatever students are learning and whether they are really learning it well,
关键是学生学习的好坏。
they will undoubtedly achieve high grades.
学习好的学生无疑将取得好成绩。
So grades are not what students are studying for,
所以，学生学习不是为了成绩。
but a measurement for parents and teachers to know students’ performance in their academic study.
但是成绩确实是家长和老师衡量学生学习效果的指标。
Secondly, grades stimulate students to learn because they will study hard to achieve high grades.
第二，成绩将激励学生学习，因为他们会为了取得好成绩而好好学习。
Afterwards, no matter what grades they have got,
之后，无论他们取得什么样的成绩，
they know that they have done well or worked hard enough in their studies.
他们就会知道他们是否已经努力学习了。
If they are not satisfied,
如果他们不满意，
they will study even harder and try to do much better in the future.
他们就会更努力地学习，并在未来表现得更好。
Lastly, some people may say grades give students too much pressure.
最后，许多人说成绩会让学生有压力。
I would say that it’s not grades
我想说造成学生压力的并不是成绩，
but what they are learning and whether they are learning it well or not that give them the pressure.
而是他们学习的好坏。
As I said previously,

if they are devoted to what they are learning,

it is very likely that they will achieve high grades.

In conclusion, grades can stimulate students to learn.
